"In - Betweener" Programs
There are a variety of options available for Swimmers who have completed all the Red Cross levels but are not yet old enough for Leadership courses. The following courses are designed to keep swimmers active and involved in aquatics:
Canadian Swim Patrols – A Lifesaving Society Program
The Swim Patrol program is enriched training for swimmers who are ready to go beyond learn-to-swim. Swim Patrol training puts your child on the path to lifeguarding. Swim Patrol is a 3-level pre-Bronze progression where participants can work on content that is organized to be both challenging and fun. Content is organized into three groups: Water Proficiency, First Aid, and Rescue.
Rookie Patrol
This program is the first of 3 swim patrol levels.
This program develops individual fitness levels to meet a timed 100m swim and 350m workout. Water proficiency skills include: swims with clothes, ready position, foot first and head first surface dives. Demonstrating an ability to conduct a primary assessment and initiating EMS are included as first aid skills. Victim recognition and throwing assists are other key elements of the program.
Ranger Patrol
This program is the second of 3 swim patrol levels.
This program enhances capability in the water, including stride entry, underwater forward and backward somersaults, lifesaving eggbeater kick and increased fitness levels to meet a 200m timed swim. Rescue skills involve an increased skill level in ABC first aid basics, victim recognition and non-contact rescues.
Star Patrol
This program is the third of 3 swim patrol levels.
An excellent preparation for the Bronze Star award, Star Patrol demands good physical conditioning and lifesaving judgment. Participants develop lifesaving and first aid skills; further refine front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke over 100m each; and complete 600m workouts and a 300m timed swim.
Bronze Star – A Lifesaving Society Program
Prerequisite: 11 years old and completed Swim Kids10 or equivalent.
Bronze Star is the pre-Bronze Medallion training standard and it is excellent preparation for success in Bronze Medallion. Participants develop problem-solving skills individually and in partners. They learn how to keep a cool head and take charge in an emergency. Includes a 400 metre timed swim.
Junior Lifeguard Club (JLC) – A Lifesaving Society Program
Prerequisite: Swim Kids10 or equivalent.
The Junior Lifeguard Club offers a fun introduction to the exciting world of lifeguarding for kids who want to stay active in the water and have completed Swim Kids 10. The JLC focuses skill development using personal-bests to determine achievement. Participants work toward improving swimming skills, lifesaving skills, fitness, leadership, and teamwork skills. Members participate in activities that are similar to real lifeguard training exercises in a controlled, safe and enjoyable setting. Effort and success are recognized with Recognition and Award Seals when a participant meets personal goals and sets personal bests. The Junior Lifeguard Club is designed for a serious purpose but the process is pure fun!
Every club member will receive an Official Junior Lifeguard Club WaterLog in which to record achievements and keep Recognition and Award Seals.
Lifesaving Sport FUNdamentals – A Lifesaving Society Program
Prerequisite: Completed Swim Kids 5 or equivalent AND 8+ years of age
In Level 1 swimmers continue stroke improvement with 25 m swims of front crawl, back crawl and whip kick. Fitness improves in 100 m workouts, 25 m sprints and introducing touch and go turns. Lifesaving sport skills include the ability to hit a target with a rope, movement with flippers, swim underneath an obstacle, secure a rescue tube to a manikin and treading water while supporting an object. Swimmers develop an understanding of playing fair. Participants should be comfortable in the deep end, be able to swim 25 meters and tread water for 45 seconds.
Swim Synchro! – A Synchro Swim Ontario Program
Prerequisite: Swim Kids10 or equivalent.
Synchronized swimming is an exciting aquatic program option for those who love swimming, gymnastics and dance. This creative, routine based synchro orientation program is designed to develop basic synchro skills while increasing existing swimming skills. Over the course of the session participants will develop a sequential routine set to music to showcase their swimming and synchro skills. Recreational synchronized swimming teaches skill development, provides an opportunity for interpersonal relations in both individual and group components, and provides a FUN and exciting aquatic activity!
All new participants will receive a nose clip at their first class.
Introduction to Synchronized Swimming
Prerequisite: Completed Swim Kids 8.
This one-hour clinic is a great option for kids who enjoy dance and gymnastics who would like to try synchro. Participants will be introduced to the basic skills and mechanics of synchronized swimming and an overview of what is involved in developing a full routine.
Zodiac Swim Club – An Exclusive Zodiac Program
Prerequisite: Swim Kids10 or equivalent.
This program is designed to teach competitive swim skills in a non-competitive environment. Zodiac swimmers will have the opportunity to experience a team environment. Swimmers will be introduced to competitive skills in a recreational setting. Their overall endurance and swimming skills will be improved throughout the session. Swimmers will learn and improve upon the four competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly). The participants will also be introduced to different training techniques that include racing starts and turns. They will be encouraged to track their personal best times and participate in team relays.
Snorkelling – An Exclusive Zodiac Program
Prerequisite: Swim Kids10 or equivalent.
Required Equipment: Participants must bring their own mask and snorkel.
This program is a fun and exciting way for children to learn how to safely explore underwater environments. Participants will learn appropriate care and use of a snorkel, mask and fins. Material covered includes safe snorkeling practices, rescue techniques and what to do when a problem arises. Top this off with some fantastic underwater games and you have an underwater adventure waiting to happen!
